Fulbrook (London School of Economics) sets out a concise account of British law on outdoor activities as part of school, particularly analyzing the yardstick of negligence and statutory liability by which judgments are make in the courts about teachers, volunteers, and leaders. Countering the mythology that the law in a malignant force opposed to kids having any fun at all, he argues that there are some very straightforward principles in the law on outdoor activities. While criminal law is occasionally invoked for serious wrongdoing, he finds, most cases are civil claims for compensation based on common law principles of tort and of statute.
