The authors argue for more attention to the role of practical experience in critical education and the need for more integrated and comprehensive approaches to helping learners respond to social, economic, and environmental challenges. They view critique as social practice and consider how critical education, as a group of approaches that address social and ecological issues through educational policy and pedagogy, can function through critical practice related to social context, place, and narration. They draw on three studies conducted in secondary settings, university summer institutes with pre-service and in-service teachers, and a digital media community action-research project with youth in Canada to show how practical experience can be more fully engaged in critical education through a focus on situated learning and everyday practices related to social relations and networks (such as peer influence and class), place (mobile learning and wayfinding), and narration and stories in terms of naming and unnaming place and telling and performing stories about oneself and one's community.
