What if doing the right thing meant betraying your family?
Nineteen forty-seven, French Indochina. Since her mother's death, eighteen year-old half-French, half-Vietnamese Nicole has been living in the shadow of her older sister, Sylvie. When Sylvie is handed control of the family silk business, Nicole persuades her sister to let her run an abandoned silk shop in the Vietnamese quarter of Hanoi. There, she is awoken to her family's involvement in the corruption of colonial rule for the first time.
Shocked and disillusioned, Nicole falls for Mark, an enigmatic American who appears to offer the perfect escape from her divided world. But who can she trust in this world where no one is what they seem?
