A new, up-to-date edition of the acclaimed, best-selling survival guide for teachers struggling to find answers to challenging behavior in the classroom.

Stressing that every child has some kind of special need, especially children with challenging behavior, and that prevention is the best intervention,Challenging Behavior in Young Children includes numerous practical, indispensable ideas, tips, and strategies for responding to children’s needs and helping them know what’s expected of them. The book gives teachers and families ways to understand and address children’s challenging behavior and presents several effective evidence-based strategies, enabling teachers to select those best suited to who they are and what they believe about teaching and the children in their classrooms. The authors help readers see each child as an individual, build a meaningful relationship with that child, figure out where s/he’s coming from, and help every child meet their own needs more appropriately. Useful to pre-school and child care educators and primary school teachers alike, the book emphasizes the teacher’s role in the behavior of children, encouraging students and educators to reflect on their own values, feelings, and actions. In addition to helpful information on inclusion, autism, culture, dual-language learning, and children with disabilities, this new edition focuses on what stress can do to children’s brains, executive function, and behavior—violence, race, climate change, the economy, technology, the Common Core, lack of money, time, and sleep. The Enhanced Pearson eText features embedded video.
