This book proposes a wide overview of the research and development of proton-conducting solid oxide materials. It is the first to approach the topic on proton-conducting ceramics and presents analysis studies from the fundamental to the most promising applied domains. It describes theoretical studies to enhance understanding of proton-transport mechanisms through materials and focuses on the main families of materials referred in the literature, highlighting their structure and their electrical and physicochemical properties. It lists the various routes of synthesis and processing methods used to develop such materials and deals with their main performances and prospects with respect to electromotive force, electrochemical hydrogen transport, and reactors. The book will be helpful for students from academic sciences as well as industrials dealing with applications of such materials.
Mathieu Marrony is project leader in the European Institute for Energy Research (EIFER), Karlsruhe, Germany, where he has been involved in fuel cell research since 2004. His present role in EIFER is to orient fuel cell R&D strategy and coordinate fuel cell projects portfolio while appraising such technology for automotive and stationary energy markets. He received his PhD in material chemistry and processes at the University of Montpellier 2, France, in 2004. During this period, he successfully validated the elaboration of advanced composite proton-conducting polymer membrane by an innovative sol–gel process and its application as electrolyte into a complete 1 kW direct-methanol fuel cell (DMFC) stack operating up to 130°C. Dr. Marrony has more than 15 years of research experience in the fields of proton-conducting materials from polymer to ceramic matrices and fuel cell domain. He has coordinated several national public-funded projects related to such topics (ANR-TECTONIC 2005–2008, ADEME COREPAC 2005–2007, ANR-CONDOR 2008–?2011); has published more than 30 papers in scientific journals, books, and proceedings; has two patents to his credit; and has presented more than 40 communications in international conferences. He is associated with various organisations, such as French National Research Agency, French Carnot Institute CED2 Association, French National Research Group in Fuel Cell, that work on material for energy. He is the main organizer of the international workshop Prospects in Protonic Ceramic Cell (PPCC).
