Since the 1960s, argues Brigg (English, U. of Guelph, Canada), mainstream novelists have been incorporating concepts of both "hard" and "soft" science into their works, while science fiction writers have been moving the boundary of traditional science fiction towards the concerns of mainstream novelists. Together, they define a new genre that is dubbed "span" by Brigg. He explores the definitions and characteristics of the genre as it is revealed in the works of a number of writers. Peter Brigg is an associate professor of English at the University of Guelph in Guelph, Ontario. He is president-elect of the Science Fiction Research Association.
