Originating in a conference organized for the 19th Sociolinguistics Symposium in Berlin in 2012, this book intends to raise Central Asia’s sociolinguistic profile by bringing it to the attention of the international community of language researchers. It looks at different frameworks and data collection methods that can provide insights into how language change can be understood in Central Asia’s multilingual contexts. It focuses specifically on language policy and planning activities as part of the nation-state building process in Central Asia, and takes a brief look at how globalization is affecting and introducing new issues into the broader Central Asian context.
