This book is designed for courses relating gender to the economy. Its purpose is to enable readers to get a clear and concise understanding of the gendered character of the economy and of economic policy.
In order to comprehensively do this, the book encompasses:
- the micro level of agency, firms, households and communities
- the meso level of markets and the state
- the macro level of economic growth, unemployment and poverty, as well as globalization and international trade.
The entry point of the book is the body of thought that constitutes gender-aware economic concepts and policies, rather than schools of thought or techniques. However, the authors’ approach if pluralist, and the context and examples used in the book will draw from global experiences.
Nicky Pouw is an economist with over twenty years of research and teaching experience in the field of international development. She is affiliated as an Associate Professor within the Governance and Inclusive Development research programme at the University of Amsterdam in the Netherlands.
