Public discourses around ‘migrant sex workers’ are often much more confident about what migrant sex workers signify but are less clear about who the ‘migrant’ is. Determining who is or is not a migrant is not a simple empirical exercise but a process of social construction that is, in the case of sex work, significantly shaped by ideas about race, class, nationality and gender.
The book offers a unique and agenda-setting account of women’s experiences, attitudes and negotiations of work, immigration and citizenship in the sex work industry in two Western countries on opposite sides of the Pacific: Australia and Canada. It expands contemporary international debates surrounding sex work, examines how contrasting regulatory frameworks produce different ‘legal’ and ‘illegal’ professional identities in the sex industry and challenges social myths about the risks and vulnerabilities of ‘migrant sex workers’.
作者簡介
Julie Ham is Assistant Professor in the Department of Sociology at the University of Hong Kong.
Prior to joining the Department of Sociology, Julie worked with the Border Crossing Observatory (Monash University), the Global Alliance Against Traffic in Women (GAATW) and with community-based research projects and organizations in Canada, working with sex workers, immigrant and refugee communities, women substance users, low-income urban communities, and anti-violence organizations.
