商品簡介
In this three-volume reference, essays are contained in volume 1, and A-Z entries on the writers of gothic literature are found in volumes 2-3. The essays (not signed) are written in a style accessible to high school and beginning undergraduates. Topics include an overview of gothic literature, gothic themes, performing arts, and visual arts. In addition to describing the painters and architects of the Gothic Revival (which corresponds to the era of gothic literature found in vols. 2-3), the essay on the visual arts also includes lengthy discussion of the architecture, sculpture, and workshops of the actual Gothic period of the 12-14th century; however, it is accompanied by only one illustration. Among the authors featured in vols. 2-3 are Margaret Atwood, Wilkie Collins, Goethe, James Hogg, Toni Morrison, Bram Stoker, and Edith Wharton. A number of sidebars describe significant works or figures. Some of the content is excerpted from previously published secondary literature.
