In a substantially revised version of his doctoral dissertation on writing habits in Late Empire Period Hattusa, Gordin argues that Hittite scribal mentality strove towards functionality and professionalism. While the number of active cuneiform scribes grew from a handful in the 15th century BC to around 60 in the 13th, he says, their character stayed much the same, which suggests that from the very beginning they saw themselves not as mere scriveners but as scholars with a keen awareness of the Babylonian heritage of their script and its versatile nature.
