Markus Virgil Hoehne is post-doctoral researcher at the Max Planck Institute for Social Anthropology in Halle/Saale, Germany. His current project is funded by the German Foundation for Peaceresearch. He did his PhD at the Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg. He did field research in northern Somalia and Nairobi (Kenya) since 2002. His publications include numerous journal articles and book chapters on conflict dynamics, political developments, state failure, state formation, the role of traditional authorities and diasaporic engagement in northern Somalia and the Horn of Africa. He is the co-editor (with Dereje Feyissa) of Borders and borderlands as Resources in the Horn of Africa. (London: James Currey, 2010) and (with Virginia Luling) of Milk and peace, drought and war: Somali culture, society and politics (London: Hurst, 2010).
