Language scholars from Europe, Hong Kong, and the US discuss the emergence and development of Arabic as the dominant language in previously Berber-speaking areas of North Africa, focusing on Algeria; how language contact with Arabic has been detrimental to other languages; the role of Arabic as a language of literacy and education; the influence of Cantonese on the development of Vietnamese; English in the British Isles; Spanish in Formosa; and Russian, in Siberia, Khakassia in Russia, the endangered Nivkh language, language contact between Russian and Chechen, the impact of Russian on Erzya in the Mordvin Republic and on Udmurt, language attitudes towards Buryat and Russian in ethnic Buryatia, and the Russian influence on language use and structures outside of Russia, such as in Germany, Belarus, and Estonia.
