Global Change and the Caribbean ─ Adaptation and Resilience

Based on papers presented at the sixth British-Caribbean Geography Seminar, held at the U. of West Indies in June 2014, the 12 chapters in this volume consider the reaction of human systems in the face of global change related to climate change, globalization, and population growth as it affects the Caribbean, and how societies adapt and develop resilience. Geographers and researchers in related disciplines in the Caribbean, North America, and Europe examine regional, national, and sectoral approaches to vulnerability, adaptation, and resilience, including Caribbean tourism and urban development, the 2014 Jamaican drought, banana farming in Dominica after Hurricane Hugo, and the projected impacts of climate change on St. Kitts; the role of social capital in adaptive capacity to address vulnerability and resilience in Jamaican farming and fishing communities, Fair Trade banana farmers in St. Lucia and inner-city communities in Kingston, Jamaica, and the Carib communities of St. Vincent; and the use of local knowledge in community resilience, including in Dominica, Guyana, Tobago, and Suriname.
