Research As Resistance ― Critical, Indigenous, and Anti-Oppressive Approaches

While neoliberalism is ever more entrenched throughout the world--in governance structures, popular culture, and media discourses--research is affected by deep cuts to funding and new requirements to make a "business case" for proposed research. Targeting advanced undergraduate and graduate-level students, Strega and Brown aim to be part of the next new wave: a resurgence of knowledge founded in a diversity of spiritualities, philosophies, cultures, languages, and experiences. They cite that, as inequality continues and because racism, colonialism and other forms of oppression are ongoing, understanding socially just ways to carry out research and construct knowledge are still essential contributions to resistance. Indigenous scholars, critical race theorists, and feminists with a long history of raising important questions about knowledge production ask: Who is entitled to create meanings about the world?
