Energy Production Systems Engineering

Equipment and systems found in various types of utility electric generation stations are explained and accompanied by examples and practice problems. The book begins by addressing common issues of electrical safety that arise in electric generations. Basic energy calculations utilizing steam enthalpy tables and mass flow rate, and an introduction to common types of fossil fuels and hydraulic turbines are presented afterward. The book then introduces common types of pumps used in auxiliary stems of power generation stations, designs and operations of plant electrical systems, focusing on safety and reliability, and the basic theory and construction of synchronous and induction generators. Distinct functions of the grounding and bonding system are described next, as well as common types of field instrumentation such as pressure transmitters, temperature transmitters, flow transmitters, level transmitters, and potential and current transformers. The book concludes by describing the proper installation of battery systems in generating stations as defined by IEEE 484, and voltage source and current VFD technologies, focusing on the applications of VFDs in power plant applications.

Thomas Howard Blair is an Engineering Fellow at Tampa Electric Company, USA, and a member of IEEE. He received his BSEE and MSEE from University of South Florida. He was previously an adjunct professor at the University of South Florida-Polytechnic, teaching graduate courses such as Electric Machines and Drives, and Energy Production Systems Engineering.
