NATO and Collective Defence in the 21st Century ─ An Assessment of the Warsaw Summit

This book presents a cutting edge assessement of NATO's collective defence strategies in the immediate aftermath of the NATO Warsaw Summit.

Collective defence came back on the agenda at the Wales Summit following the Russian annexation of Crimea, and Warsaw is in many respects a follow-up and operationalization of Wales. But is NATO delivering? The chapters in this volume critically assess and discuss the various aspects of the main issues raised and the different initiatives proposed at the sumit, including the Very High Readiness Taskforce (VJTF), nuclear policies of deterrence, NATO's presence in the Baltics and Poland, and Sweden and Finland's relationship with NATO. The book will be a basis and a reference for on-going debates and discussions taking place in Europe and North America when it comes to collective defence and NATO’s relations to Russia.

Karsten Friis is a Senior Adviser and head of NUPIs Research Group on Security and Defence. Friis has previously worked for the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) in Serbia, Montenegro and Kosovo, as well as for the Norwegian Armed Forces in Oslo and in Kosovo.
