The Vermeer String Quartet is well known throughout the world for its performances of Franz Joseph Haydn's The Seven Last Words of Christ , in which the seven musical movements of the piece are interspersed with spoken meditations. This volume presents the text of some 60 meditations given at these performances over the years by various religious figures. Two music CDs accompany the volume. The first contains a complete performance of the piece by VSQ, along with seven spoken meditations. The second consists of brief excerpts illustrating Young's (VSQ's violist) discussion of Haydn's composition and its relationship to the scripture that inspired it.
