Resurrecting many of the complaints of contemporary right-wing commentators on the conduct of the Vietnam War, Walton (defense and strategic studies, Southwest Missouri State U.) identifies six key strategic points that he argues should have been recognized by the successive administrations prosecuting the war. He argues that U.S. policymakers should have realized that there was no key strategic interest in the area and therefore should not have become militarily involved in the first place. However, once the U.S. was involved, he says, it became of paramount importance to win the war in order to preserve credibility. To do this policymakers should have risked war with China, should have operated with impunity in the neutral countries of Laos and Cambodia, should have bombed the heck out of North Vietnam, and should have professionalized the South Vietnamese military.
