Film can be a socio-political and artistic-transformative cultural practice through which acts and activism are performed. Especially, in societies that restrict freedoms, such as religious practice. Going beyond ideological constructs of activism and legal definitions of citizenship, this book offers a novel approach to understanding the ontology of acts and activist citizenship, particularly in the context of their expression through film.
Films from Saudi Arabia, the Balkans, Russia and South Korea are used to illustrate the links between performative utterance, created scenes and acts. In doing this the author poses the question of whether citizens are stepping out of dominant cultural ideologies to overcome social, ethnic, religious and economic divisions. Thus proposing new concepts of equality, universality, and justice.
This book is a new and unorthodox exploration of the ontology of acts and is essential reading for any academic interested in religion, theology, film and citizenship studies.
Milja Radovic works within the interdisciplinary field of theology, media and culture, and her research has spanned across the fields of transnational cinema, religion, ideology, citizenship, activism, nationalism, conflict and peace-building. She has most recently collaborated on three projects: the CITSEE Project (The Europeanization of Citizenship in the Successor States of the Former Yugoslavia); Peacebuilding through Media, Arts and?Religion; Ethics in the Making of War and Peace. Milja is the author of the book: Transnational Cinema and Ideology (2014). Her current work focuses on radicality of freedom through acts of citizenship, otherness, and the issue of radicalization.
