Attachment and Emotional Development in the Classroom ─ Theory and Practice

With the recent interest in mental health issues among children and young people in schools, the UK government found itself facing a daunting challenge. In an average class of 30, 15-year-old, pupils, three could have a mental disorder; ten are likely to have witnessed their parents separate; one could have experienced the death of a parent; seven are likely to have been bullied; six may be self-harming. Colley and Cooper present their book as a core text for initial teacher training (ITT) programs across the UK. Explored are key issues revolving around emotional development and attachment in the classroom. The book illustrates how the commitment to fostering positive and supportive teacher-pupil relationships can contribute to the positive emotional growth of children in the classroom.
