In this new and highly original textbook for a range of interdisciplinary courses and degree programmes focusing on marine and coastal resource management, readers are offered an introduction to the subject matter, a broad perspective and understanding, some case study applications, and a reference source. Each chapter is written by an international authority and expert in the respective field, bringing together perspectives from physical and human geography, marine biology and fisheries, planning and surveying, environmental change, engineering and tourism.
In addition to an overview of the theory and practice of its subject area, each chapter includes detailed 'boxed' case-studies to illustrate the associated technology and applications, including relationships to decision-making requirements at local to national levels. Each topic also includes a list of references for further reading, with a selection of key journal papers and URLs, and some study questions.

David Green is Director of the Centre for Marine and Coastal Zone Management and Senior Lecturer in the Department of Geography and Environment at the University of Aberdeen, Scotland, UK. He has edited several books, his most recent being Coastal Zone Management (Thomas Telford Press, 2009) and Marine and Coastal GeoSpatial Technologies. Coastal Systems and Continental Margins Book Series (Kluwer Scientific/Springer). He also, according to his CV, has other books in preparation on GIS, information technology and related topics. He is also Editor in Chief - Journal of Coastal Conservation, Planning and Management.
Jeff Payne is Deputy Director of NOAA Coastal Services Center, Charleston, South Carolina, USA. As such, he is running a large number of research and advisory projects, including communication and outreach to the public on coastal and marine issues, particularly in the south-east USA and Caribbean.
