Student Engagement in the Digital University ─ Sociomaterial Assemblages

Student Experiences in the Digital University challenges mainstream conceptions and assumptions about students’ engagement with digital resources in higher education. The book‘s thesis is that students’ experiences in the digital university cannot be reduced either to transferable skills or typological categories, but must be understood as embodied, socially situated and taking place in complex networks involving human and non-human actors. A series of chapters incorporating empirical data from a JISC-funded project on digital literacies concludes with far-reaching implications for research, policy and practice.

Lesley Gourlay is a senior lecturer in the department of Culture, Communication and Media and UCL Institute of Education, UK. She is co-convenor of the Society for Research into Higher Education’s UK-wide Digital University Network, and an executive editor for the journal Teaching in Higher Education.

Martin Oliver is Professor of Education and Technology at the UCL Institute of Education, UK. He has edited Research in Learning Technology and Learning, Media and Technology, has served on the editorial boards of six journals, and is a past president of the Association for Learning Technology.
