Society and Education: An Outline of Comparison explores the relation between culture and education in Europe, and extracts methodological lessons for the comparative study of education. In particular, the study within this book aims to show the inextricable relation of education as a social institution with its social-historical context, whilst also clearly demonstrating the European particularity in education historically and today.
In pursuing these aims, the book aims to generate a theory of cultural and educational comparison. It does so by addressing a set of theoretical debates that take place in this field, whilst also working with theoretical concepts often mentioned nowadays but hardly used as a method of inquiry, such as the concept of ‘social imaginary’. The formation of the European social imaginary is identified in three pivotal historical epochs: Greek Antiquity, Modernity and, nowadays, the era of transnational Europe and globalisation. Moutsios analyses the ‘magma’ of the main imaginary significations characterising each era and their incarnation in educational institutions, whilst simultaneously examining how society in each historical period compares its own institutions with those of other societies.
The book demonstrates the embeddedness of education in its cultural context and should, therefore, be of great interest to those within the international academic community who are interested in the areas of comparative education, the sociology and history of education, education policy, and European studies.
