Circulation of Knowledge ─ Explorations into the History of Knowledge

Historians have long been interested in knowledge—its nature and origin, and the circumstances under which it was created—but it has only been in recent decades that the history of knowledge has emerged as an academic field in its own right. In Circulation of Knowledge, a group of Nordic researchers address the burning issue of the day: the circulation of knowledge in social or scientific circles, and what happens to it when it is in motion. Reflecting on a range of empirical studies, from sixteenth-century cartography to seventies’ sexology, the authors make a significant contribution to the growing international research on the history of knowledge. The authors offer ground-breaking insights into the theory and methodology of this new field of research, and invite early stage researchers to explore the possibilities of testing their own source material.

Anna Nilsson Hammar?is a lecturer in history at Lund University. Her research is mainly on early modern intellectual, religious, and cultural history, and she is currently studying the concept of conscience.?David Larsson Heidenblad?is a lecturer in history at Lund University. His research interests are cultural, environmental, and religious history and his ongoing research concern debates concerning mankind’s future in the early 1970s.?Kari Nordberg is a historian and lecturer at the University College of Southeast Norway. Her research focus on the history of sexuality, sex education, the welfare state, and modern medicine.?Johan Ostling is associate professor and senior lecturer in history at Lund University. His research has a focus on modern intellectual, political, and educational history; and he has made recent studies on the Humboldtian idea of the university.?Erling Sandmo is professor of history at the University of Oslo. He specializes in the history of culture and knowledge before 1800, and his recent publications focus on opera, cartography, and the theory of history.
