Casler, a historical researcher and former park ranger, and Wood, who taught anthropology, compile fur-trade journal and letter books from Fort Tecumseh and Fort Pierre Chouteau, to illustrate the commerce of the Great Plains along the Missouri River from 1830 to 1850, as well as company business and personal information about individuals, in what is now South Dakota. They consist of a Fort Tecumseh journal by trader Jacob Halsey, a letter book from Fort Tecumseh, and five letter books from Fort Pierre Chouteau, and include annotations explaining terminology and names.
