Magnússon addresses various aspects of how states can establish the outer limits of the continental shelf beyond the 200 nautical miles allowed by international law in order to explore and exploit natural resources from the seabed and to forbid others from doing so. In particular, he examines the relationship between the delineation and delimitation of the outer continental shelf, the relationship between the inner and outer continental shelf, and the relationship between the Commission on the Limits of the Continental Shelf (CLCS) and international courts and tribunals. Bjarni Mar Magnusson, Ph.D. (2013), University of Edinburgh, is Assistant Professor in International Law at Reykjavik University. He has published on public international law and was a junior counsel for Bangladesh in the maritime boundary delimitation case against Myanmar.
