The Twentieth-Century String Quartet ― An Historical Introduction and Catalogue

Lawrence (author of many books on music and music education) provides a database of original works written for the standard string quartet during the 20th century. Where a composer has added other components such as electronic or computer-assisted sound sources, voice, or an occasional obligato instrument, thee works have been included if the composer has identified them as part of the string quartet repertoire. Contents include an introduction, database, and three appendices (summaries by countries, contexts for selected composers, and an index of publishers). Entries are arranged alphabetically and include composer's name, title of work when applicable, dates of birth and death, publisher, and recording-CD data. Annotation c. Ian Lawrence was born in London, received a master degree from Queens' College, University of Cambridge, and a doctorate from the University of Leeds. He was formerly Head of the Department of Education, West London Institute (now Brunel University), London, U.K. He is the author of many articles and books on music and music education, including Composers and the Nature of Music Education.
