Vaishnavism, is one of the major traditions within Hinduism and inspired by the Bengali Krishna devotee Chaitanya (1486-1533), has been a central feature of the religious and cultural landscape of Bengal since the sixteenth century. It has also had significant impact on other regions of the subcontinent, such as Orissa, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Manipur, Assam, Bihar, and present day Bangladesh, and more recently has assumed notable global presence. The tradition continued to play significant roles—religious, social, and cultural—in the lives of wide and diverse sections of Bengali society and beyond throughout the colonial period. Its systematic investigation sheds valuable new light on the richness and complexity of the texture and dynamics of Hinduism during the colonial period.
This book offers an overview of the Bengali Vaishnava tradition within the pivotal context of colonial Bengal. Contrary to other studies, which have paid attention to a now familiar host of figures and currents of religious reform associated with the so-called Bengal or Hindu ‘Renaissance’, this book sheds light on the significant role of pre-existing Hindu religious communities (sampradaya) in this context. Bringing together both leading and rising scholars in this nascent field of study, from across the disciplines of social and intellectual history, philology, theology, and anthropology, this book showcases cutting-edge research on Vaishnavism in its manifold forms—elite and popular, urban and rural—in the context of colonial Bengal that collectively exhibited both a high degree of thematic cohesiveness and disciplinary breadth. It is a systematic examination of the tradition at this time within the broader critical discourses on Hinduism in particular in the context of colonial Bengal and South Asia more broadly.
Unprecedented in both scope and disciplinary breadth, thereby making a major contribution to a burgeoning field of Bengali Vaishnava studies, this book will be of interest to scholars of modern Hinduism and colonial South Asian social and intellectual history.
