These three phases of scientific activity may be illustrated by a simple example. Needing a flashlight, we grab one and flick the switch, but no light is produced. After pondering this a moment, we form the explanation or hypothesis, on the basis of previous experience, that the bulb is the most likely source of trouble. We unscrew the bulb, drop it in the wastebasket, and screw in a fresh one. But the light still does not work, despite our thumpings and mutterings. We try the new bulb in a second flashlight, and it works. Digging the original bulb out of the wastebasket, we find that it, too, works in the second flashlight. We reject our first hypothesis and form a new one: the batteries are worn out. After inserting fresh batteries into the first flashlight, we flick the switch and it works.
