Isotopic Constraints On Earth System Processes

Isotopic principles have revolutionized Earth science, from our understanding of how and when the Earth first formed, to the formation of its continents and biosphere. Increasingly, isotopes are used to interrogate the impact of humans on Earth's systems. To continually advance these pursuits, both fundamental understanding of isotopic fraction and quantitative models to describe isotopic partitioning in space and time are critical. Throughout his career, Don DePaolo has pushed the frontiers of both our fundamental understanding and quantitative treatment of isotopic partitioning in order to develop new isotopic approaches and advance existing ones. Isotopic Constraints on Earth System Science will honor the contributions of Don DePaolo, one of the foremost intellects in this science. Don's eclectic scientific interests have produced a wide range of students crossing a large spectrum of specialties. This contribution will be a collection of scientific papers written by his many students that have gone on to have successful careers in academia and in the national laboratories. The aim will be to collect both topical reviews and new scientific advances to provide an overview of the varied applications of isotopes in the Earth Sciences. An integrating theme will be the use of modeling approaches. Specifically, this volume will address three related topics (1) the application of isotopes to constrain Earth history, (2) the application of isotopes to interrogate Earth processes and (3) isotopic approaches that quantify and inform human interactions with Earth's varied systems.
