Their goddaughter is missing, and young widow, lightkeeper Belle Logan, puts aside her bitterness to rely on her former beau, Lawrence Rinehart. Fearing a corrupt social worker in cahoots with the dubious Tennessee Children's Home, has kidnapped Ruby, they exhaust all efforts to obtain help from the Memphis police, but the political power is too strong. Belle, Lawrence, and their motley crew of wannabe detectives set out to find Ruby.
Both Belle's faith and Lawrence's finances are tested when they dig deep into the circle of stolen children. They risk their all to locate Ruby before she can be delivered to the buyer. Some of their escapades become laughable wild goose chases. Others endanger their lives.

By going undercover and masquerading as potential buyers, volunteers, and medical workers, the group finds other taken children. Some they rescue; other little ones they must leave behind in conditions too horrific to imagine. Still, they cannot find Ruby.
When they identify the kidnapper, she is murdered in her jail cell, and Belle is the only suspect.
