Concepts and Their Uses / Begriffe Und Ihr Gebrauch

Philosophisches Wissen wird haufig als begriffliches Wissen beschrieben; Begriffe sind seit der Platonischen Ideenlehre ein zentrales Thema der Philosophie. In jungster Zeit sind neue, interessante Entwicklungen zu verzeichnen. So untersucht die experimentelle Philosophie das Begriffsverstandnis mit Methoden, die in der Philosophie neu sind. Und ein gescharftes Bewusstsein fur problematische, etwa diskriminierende Begriffe hat eine Begriffsethik auf den Plan gerufen, in der Begriffsbildungen kritisch evaluiert werden. Vor diesem Hintergrund untersuchen die Beitrage dieses Bandes wichtige Begriffe und die philosophische Arbeit an ihnen. Damit geht es auch um das Selbstverstandnis der Philosophie und den Beitrag, den ihre Begriffsklarungen fur die Gesellschaft leisten konnen. Philosophical knowledge is often described as conceptual. Therefore, concepts have been an important topic in philosophy at least since Plato's theory of forms. Very recently, the study of concepts has taken new and exciting routes. Experimental philosophers investigate the understanding of concepts with tools that are new to philosophy. Furthermore, an increased awareness of problematic concepts - e.g., concepts that contribute to discrimination - has helped to establish the new field of conceptual ethics. Against this backdrop, the contributions to this volume explore important concepts and philosophical work on them. In this way, the volume also addresses the self-understanding of philosophy and the contribution that philosophical work on concepts can bring to broader society.
