Alicia tells the spellbinding story of young, free-spirited Mexican, Alicia Serrano, who experiences romance, tragedy and hope in her adventurous life.

Alicia's life is beset with challenges and setbacks from the moment she's born in 1960. From an early age she must develop a steely resolve to overcome them.

She is highly intelligent and a gifted athlete, characteristics she shares with her older brother Andr廥. An outstanding runner, he's caught up in the political turmoil engulfing Mexico in 1968 before the Olympic Games. He is a victim of the Tlatelolco Massacre in October, and she does her best to save his life.

An avid reader, her love of language becomes a passion. As a highly qualified linguist, she travels to Spain and then West Africa, where she joins a team of Australians on an expedition kayaking down the Niger River, a feat never achieved before. During the adventure she falls in love with Alain, the love of her life. When he is killed in a terrorist ambush in Sierra Leone, she goes through a period of unbearable grief.

Calling on all her reserves of courage and resilience, she escapes to Western Australia, where she meets Lennard. He's a world-renowned Aboriginal glass artist and activist, who invites her to assist in reviving Malgana, his dying language.
