Abandoned in the wilderness as a child, Lekore has lived with the ghost of his ancestor near an ancient battlefield of bones, waiting for the man who deserted him to return as promised. Lekore's life is quiet until a traveling Kel princess and her entourage are attacked by the enemies of her people. Summoning flame, Lekore steps in to help.

Wounded, he's brought to the royal capital of the Kel-said to be built by the Sun Gods themselves. Caught in a net of silk and secrets, Lekore finds himself the focus of political intrigue, midnight assassins, and a deviant faction of the Sun Church-all thirsting for his blood.

Captured by the deviant worshippers, Lekore's blood is used to beckon darkness. At the same time, furious storms rise out of the north, strong enough to destroy the city and outlying lands. Lekore must find the source of its wrath, deep in the deadly Wildwood, but first he must flee a city that won't let him escape.

Meanwhile, the darkness summoned by his blood is answering from the stars...
