Fourteen-year-old Emma Wilson documents the terrifying changes in her notebook as neighborhood pets vanish and strange occurrences multiply around their suburban home. Her younger brother Aiden forms a dangerous attachment to Echo, blind to the creature's increasingly predatory nature.

When territorial tensions erupt into violence and an unnatural fire with blue-green flames consumes the Wilson home, the family flees, leaving behind all evidence of their scientific transgressions. Authorities investigating the scene discover unusual remains and Emma's partially burned notebook, containing frantic warnings about what survived.
