A GIFT FOR THE REVERTS (Second Part of Welcome to Islam)

All praise be to Allah Almighty, who has guided you, dear brother or sister, to the beautiful path of Islam. This divine religion is a gift, and your acceptance of it is a sign of Allah's mercy upon you.

My sincere advice to you is to find a teacher-someone knowledgeable, pious, and sincere. Islam is not based on personal opinion; it is a complete way of life that must be learned properly. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ was a teacher, and his Companions were students. Today, many reverts try to learn Islam through books, websites, and videos. While these resources can be useful, they cannot replace the wisdom, clarity, and spiritual insight that come from learning directly from a qualified teacher.

In the West, we are often taught to rely on self-learning. But Islam teaches humility, submission, and seeking knowledge through trustworthy sources. Many people speak in the name of Islam without proper understanding. So be cautious. Look for a teacher who:

• Lives what they preach.
• Follows the mainstream Sunni path (Ahlus Sunnah wal Jama'ah).
• Prays regularly.
• Shows love for Allah and His Messenger ﷺ.
• Avoids extremist ideas and divisive groups.

A trusted teacher should help you build good character (akhlaaq), not just give you information. You will know a good teacher by their actions more than their words.

Also, seek the companionship of practicing Muslims who can support you. Having good Muslim friends will make your early journey much easier. Most Muslims will be happy to help, especially those who follow the peaceful mainstream path of Islam-those who celebrate Mawlid, send Durood (salutations) upon the Prophet ﷺ, and avoid harsh or extreme interpretations.

Before announcing your reversion to non-Muslim friends or family, take time to learn the basics of your faith. Reactions can vary-some may support you, others may react emotionally or negatively. It's wise to wait until your heart is firm and your understanding is sound. Let your character show them the beauty of Islam.

Be patient with yourself. You don't have to know everything at once. If someone asks you a question you can't answer, it's okay to say, "I'm still learning." Continue to grow in knowledge and practice.

Think of Islam like a meal. If you try to eat everything at once, you may feel overwhelmed. If you eat too little, you'll stay hungry. But if you take steady, balanced portions-through prayer, learning, and good company-you will grow strong and spiritually satisfied.

Dear revert, congratulations on your choice. The early days may be challenging, but with time, faith, and patience, things will become easier. You'll discover a joy that no words can fully describe. In the end, your heart will know you chose the best path.
