The tales contained in Waltz of Stars and Sea are often surprising, off-putting, funny, or a combination of the above, intertwined over and over with a powerful sense of longing and affection.
The author's predisposition towards horror goes hand in hand with their earnest strive for love in all its forms, even in the most dangerous or grotesque of places, peppering humor throughout to offer some respite from the more intense pieces.
The book's structure can be dizzying to traverse - many characters appear multiple times across its 55 short stories, ordered not by their worlds' chronologies but by that of each tale's actual writing - and presents itself almost as an ensemble of puzzles to be pieced together the more the reader digs into it, coming together in quiet harmony.
