Laura is missing. Her parents fear the worst - she is their golden girl, their English rose, who would never leave them of her own accord.

But Wren knows the dark side of her big sister - she has tormented Wren since her earliest years, and is obsessed with the Dead and the Devil in mythical Avebury, where they now live. And she has the power to manipulate everyone and every situation for her own gain.

If Laura has gone, it is because she wanted to.

But how can Wren find out the truth, when the only world she is happy in is inside her books?

Then Taran appears... For Wren, he is a hero from her favourite fantasy stories, whereas Laura saw him as a weird nerd, someone she could get to groom her horse, by fluttering her eyelashes.

But Taran is neither of these. He has a mystical connection to the landscape around them and when he and Wren embark on a journey to look for Laura, Wren discovers there might be a different way of knowing her new home... and her sister.
