1910, Valle-Incl嫕 set out to narratively tackle the quintessential epic theme: war, offering a depiction as broad as it was complex of the unfolding of the third and final
Carlist War, in which he sought to make 'the voice of an entire people' resonate. Despite the boldness and the achievements of his effort, Valle abandoned the project, dissatisfied with its development.
More than fifteen years would pass before his next novel,
Tirano Banderas, saw the light of day in
1926-a work in which the writer reached one of the pinnacles of his prodigious art, and, indeed, of twentieth-century fiction as a whole. With it, he inaugurated a rich literary tradition: the 'dictator novel.
