"The Enneads" is a monumental collection of treatises that serves as the foundation of Neoplatonic philosophy. Authored by the 3rd-century philosopher Plotinus and later compiled and edited by his student Porphyry, this work explores the depths of metaphysics, ethics, and spirituality. The text is divided into six groups of nine treatises, each delving into complex questions regarding the nature of the soul, the structure of the cosmos, and the ultimate source of all existence: "The One."
Plotinus's thought represents a synthesis and expansion of Platonic tradition, influencing centuries of Western and Middle Eastern philosophical and theological development. Through rigorous dialectic and mystical insight, the work addresses the relationship between the material world and the divine realm of forms. This translation by Stephen MacKenna is celebrated for its literary quality and its success in capturing the profound philosophical intensity of the original Greek. "The Enneads" remains an essential text for anyone seeking to understand the transition from classical Greek thought to the mystical traditions of late antiquity and beyond.
