I used to answer without thinking.
Now, I hesitate.
Where Are You From, Really? is a deeply personal reflection on identity, belonging, and the quiet ways everything can change without you realizing it. I grew up between Canada, Lebanon, and Syria, moving through a life that once felt clear and stable, where the answer to that question seemed obvious.
It wasn't.
Through memories of summers in Lebanon, family gatherings that felt endless, and moments that once defined what "home" meant to me, I begin to notice the subtle shifts I had ignored for years. Conversations change. People leave. The same places start to feel different. What once felt permanent slowly becomes uncertain.
Nothing happens all at once.
It happens quietly.
A financial crisis that reshapes relationships. Distance that grows without being spoken about. A single moment that makes everything feel fragile in a way it never did before.
And slowly, without realizing it, my answer begins to change.
This is not a story about one event or one place. It's about what it feels like to belong somewhere, and then to question that belonging. To hold onto memories while recognizing they no longer reflect the present. To understand that identity is not fixed, but something that shifts with time, experience, and perspective.
Because sometimes, the hardest part isn't answering the question.
It's realizing you no longer can.
