He believed that the inverse-square law of gravity had been known to Pythagoras, concealed in the harmonic ratios of the spheres, and that his own discovery of it was not an invention but a recovery, the retrieval, from the divine text of nature, of a truth that God had placed there at the beginning of creation and reserved for one particular reader to find.
