Every Thursday night, she leads a support group in the basement of Greater Mount Calvary Baptist Church on the South Side of Chicago. Eight women in folding chairs. Folgers coffee. A ritual: they say the names of the dead. Frankie. Diamond. La La. Coco. Tamara. Keisha. The names rise to the fluorescent lights and come back down like rain. The names are the carrying. The carrying is the point.
OLD TESTAMENT moves between the present - the group, the women, the slow gravitational pull toward a decision - and the past, where each name becomes a chapter: a flashback to the woman, the life, the death, the specific body part where Mona carries her. The question is what stopping looks like when the work is the only life you've known, when the body that does the work is the body you built from beauty-shop hormones and kitchen-table silicone, and when the women you carry are the women who taught you to survive.
