The Sophia of Jesus Christ is a breathtaking and essential manuscript from the Nag Hammadi library, offering a rare glimpse into the esoteric beliefs of early Gnostic Christians. Set after the resurrection, the narrative describes a secret gathering of the twelve disciples and seven women followers on a mountain in Galilee. There, the Savior appears to them as an immense angel of light, ready to impart the ultimate, hidden truths-the "Sophia" or Divine Wisdom.
Unlike canonical texts that focus on moral teachings or earthly events, this profound dialogue dives directly into the mechanics of the cosmos. The disciples ask penetrating questions about the origin of the universe, the nature of the true God, and the complex spiritual hierarchies that govern reality. The Savior responds by revealing a universe of emanations, where the Divine Mind cascades downward into the material world, and explains how the enlightened soul can navigate its way back to the source.
