Since the mid-1980s, research on family businesses has seen a significant resurgence of interest. Indeed, the triumphant return of family capitalism has been accompanied by a wealth of literature on a wide range of topics. Among the most prominent themes are conceptual studies. Recently, these studies have tended to define the family business using a multi-criteria approach that draws the lines of demarcation between family businesses and non-family businesses. In this context, family social capital is presented as a source of the family business's distinctiveness. In addition to its usefulness as a tool for analyzing the specificity and heterogeneity of family businesses, this form of social capital also serves as an explanatory factor for managerial choices and behaviors, as well as for the overall performance outcomes of the family business.
