商品簡介

Obadiah, the shortest book in the Old Testament, delivers a powerful message of divine justice, human responsibility, and lasting hope. The prophecy is directed primarily against Edom, the nation descended from Esau, because of its pride and its cruel treatment of Judah, the nation descended from Esau's twin brother, Jacob. The troubled relationship between these peoples reaches back to Genesis: Jacob and Esau struggled before birth, Jacob obtained Esau's birthright and received Isaac's covenant blessing, and years of separation followed. Although the brothers were later personally reconciled, hostility repeatedly arose between their descendants. For this reason, Edom's conduct was especially grievous; it had acted violently against "your brother Jacob." Obadiah begins by announcing that the LORD will summon nations against Edom. Proud of its fortified dwellings among the rocky heights, Edom believed itself secure, but God declared that even if it rose like an eagle and built among the stars, He would bring it down. Its treasures would be searched out, its allies would betray it, and its celebrated wisdom and military strength would fail. Edom's guilt involved more than arrogance. When Jerusalem suffered invasion and destruction, Edom stood aloof, rejoiced over Judah's downfall, boasted during its distress, entered the city, seized its possessions, blocked the escape of fugitives, and handed survivors over to their enemies. The prophecy does not identify the invader, and its date is debated, although many interpreters connect it with Babylon's destruction of Jerusalem in 586 BC.

Obadiah shows that indifference to suffering can become participation in evil, particularly when people celebrate, exploit, or assist in another's ruin. The message then widens from Edom to all nations: the day of the LORD is near, and what they have done will return upon them. God's judgment is not uncontrolled revenge but righteous justice against pride, violence, betrayal, and oppression. Yet destruction is not the prophecy's final word. On Mount Zion there will be deliverance and holiness, and the house of Jacob will recover its inheritance. Jacob and Joseph will become like fire, while Esau will be like stubble, portraying the decisive fall of Edom's hostile national power. God's scattered people will again possess their lands, deliverers will ascend Mount Zion to judge the mountains of Esau, and the book concludes with its central hope: "the kingdom will be the LORD's." Obadiah therefore warns that wealth, strategic security, political alliances, intelligence, and military power cannot shield the proud from God. It also comforts the betrayed and oppressed by declaring that God sees their pain, holds aggressors accountable, and remains faithful to His covenant purposes. Its message calls believers to reject pride, resentment, gloating, indifference, and exploitation; to show mercy to suffering neighbors and estranged relatives; and to trust that history will not finally belong to violent rulers or arrogant nations, but to the LORD, whose righteous kingdom will overcome evil and restore His people.
