Find Your Inner Sam Walton

Long before Walmart existed, Sam was just a hardworking boy growing up during the Great Depression.

His family was not rich. In fact, like many American families during that difficult time, they had to work hard for everything they had. Sam learned early that children were expected to contribute and help support the family.

Years later, Sam explained that he learned from a very young age that it was important to become a giver rather than a taker.

That lesson shaped his life forever.

As a child, Sam milked cows, delivered newspapers, sold magazine subscriptions door-to-door, and even raised rabbits and pigeons to sell for extra money.

He did not complain

Sam later said that his mother constantly encouraged him to set high goals and believe in himself. He took her advice seriously.

By middle school, Sam already showed signs of unusual ambition. He became the youngest Eagle Scout in Missouri history. In high school, he played quarterback on an undefeated state championship football team and also played on a state championship basketball team. He made the honor roll and was elected class president.

But what made Sam special was not just his energy or ambition.

It was his attitude toward people.

Even as a young man, Sam made a habit of greeting everyone first. Popular or unpopular, rich or poor, it did not matter. He learned the names of janitors and classmates alike. He believed every person mattered.

That small habit would later become one of the foundations of Walmart's culture.

Sam Walton's story is not really about becoming wealthy.

It is about leadership.

It is about resilience.

It is about learning from failure

Most of all, it is about understanding that success is built one small decision at a time.
