The record says the jury found Warren Doyle guilty and sent him to die. The record is a lie.
Twenty-seven years ago, a federal jury deadlocked eight to four to acquit Warren Doyle of murder. Then someone changed the verdict form, altered the clerk's minute entry, and entered a conviction on a deliberation that never reached one. Doyle has spent every day since on death row. Now the state has set the date it means to kill him.
Elliot Burns doesn't take cases anymore. He builds a wall of index cards in a rented back room, each one a trial where the record was quietly rewritten, all of them leaning toward a single court. Doyle's is the first card he pulls, because Doyle is the only name on the wall with a clock running against it.
There is one piece of proof left. A recording of the deliberation that captures the jury telling the marshal they could not agree. And there is a second clock: a routine records purge is days from destroying every remaining tape, and the man who has spent thirty years editing American justice means to finish the job before Burns can prove it happened.
To save Doyle, Burns has to prove a verdict was forged. To prove it, he has to win before two clocks run out. And the appeal is already headed for the one court where the man behind all of it now sits.
