The Buts of the Bible: Biblical Characters and the Crossroads of Life series is designed to provide churches and individuals with an additional resource for in-depth, life-application study of God's Word. It focuses on biblical characters from both the Old and New Testaments, looking at their circumstances, struggles, temptations, spiritual defeats and victories. In studying these characters, you will see that the word translated "but" (or another word with similar meaning) often represents a turning point or decision point in their lives which provides relevant lessons to our lives today.
Booklet 1 covered Old Testament characters from Genesis to Deuteronomy.
Booklet 2 focuses on characters from the New Testament and contains the following nine lessons:
1. "But This Man Has Done Nothing Wrong" - A Lesson on Life's Decision-Points (Pilate, a Centurion, and Two Criminals)
2. "Should Not Perish, But Have Eternal Life" - A Lesson on Authentic Inquiry (Nicodemus)
3. "But I Say to You" - A Lesson on Radical Relationships (the Sermon on the Mount)
4. "But a ... Samaritan" - A Lesson on Breaking through Class Stereotypes and Restrictions (Two Samaritans)
5. "But God ... Because of His Great Love" - A Lesson on Compassion for the Outcasts (The Paralytic and Tax Collector)
6. "But ... That the Works of God Might Be Displayed" - A Lesson on Plainspoken Testimony (The Man Born Blind)
7. "No Longer a Slave, But ... a Beloved Brother"- A Lesson on Restoration (Onesimus)
8. "... But I Must Decrease." - A Lesson on Servanthood (John the Baptist)
9. "But Peter Said to Him..." - A Lesson on Principles of In-Depth Discipleship (Jesus and Peter)
Each booklet is in workbook format with Scripture passages to read and questions to answer which lead you through the biblical characters' circumstances and challenge you to think about similar decisions or situations in your life.
The lessons are designed for a little over an hour each, but could take longer depending on how much discussion you have.
